Sunday 7/19 - The Lord is my shepherd

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.
The LORD makes me lie down in green pastures,
and leads me beside still waters.
You restore my soul, O LORD...

These are some of the most familiar words of scripture. And with good reason. They speak directly to some of the hardest realities of life: that we face enemies, that our journey takes us through dark valleys, that the path to a safe and restful place is not certain or well-marked.

Each day we hope for guidance, for a good shepherd who will be with us, and help us seek the peaceful refuge we need. And each Sunday we gather together to praise God, to sing. to share our lives and experience God in community. This Sunday starting at 10am at St. Matthew's we will have a guest musician, Andy Chopra, and Paul Bellan-Boyer will preach.

Summer 2015 - Season of Pentecost

The Season of Pentecost uses the color green to decorate the altar and for vestments in the service. The green color, seen also in the summertime natural world, is also used to refer to the "greening power of the Holy Spirit," the ability of God to bring about new life, to call forth healing and renewal, to make things grow.

God's people at our best are always turning, like new shoots to the sun, to the source of our power, our healing, our growth. The light of Christ is transforming the world, leading God's people in the direction of kindness, teaching wisdom, and showering mercy upon those in need.

At. St, Matthew's, summertime worship begins each Sunday at 10am - downstairs in air-conditioned Bavendam Hall.

Pentecost - May 24

The day of Pentecost recalls God's gift of the Holy Spirit to all people. God can cross any human boundary: language, religion, political borders. And God does so, because God's vision for humanity is greater than our limits.

On and after that first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit brought forth amazing gifts: speaking in tongues, repentance and baptism, sharing of wealth, and the building of a new community that would eventually be called "church." In celebration of that day and of the many saints who have been part of this great assembly, we wear red or another bright color. Rev. Hans Arnesen will precah and preside at a service of Holy Communion.

Come! Receive the gifts of God!

Lent - the journey to Easter

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation

The Season of Christmas

The season of Christmas begins with Jesus' birth and extends to Epiphany (3 Kings, January 6). We celebrate the events of Jesus' birth recognizing God's radical step to be with us, in human form, knowing human life in its fullness.

We gather together in the church to share each other's lives, walking where Jesus walked: with people in need, with people seeking healing, with our neighbors and even with our enemies. God's call to walk the walk calls us to growth, calls us to be transformed by the power of love and God's vision of justice. And this mission cannot be accomplished by walking alone. St. Matthew's, Grace Church Van Vorst, Temple Beth-El, and the Christian Church of Jersey City had a blast at our Christmas Day community meal, sharing food and fellowship with all who came.

We walk together each Sunday at 11am. Come walk with us.

O come, all ye faithful!

Christmas Eve - the babe is born - 7:30 service

Is this whole thing about a little bitty baby? Well, yes! The birth of Jesus is the moment we celebrate as God truly with us, in human form, knowing human joys and sorrows, sharing human weaknesses and gifts. God's humanity is an affirmation of our humanity, and of the hope that is born with every human life.

The rituals - the candles, the carols, the tree, the gift-giving - are important when they, like Christ himself, awaken in us the best of our humanity.

This Christmas Eve, Wednesday December 24 7:30pm, St. Matthew's sings the world's joy with special music, holy bread and wine, candelight, each other, and yes - the baby Jesus, born in Bethlehem and born anew in the lives he is transforming.

O come, let us adore him!

The image is a part of the icon of the nativity in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the spot which tradition recognizes as the site of Jesus' birth. His parents rejoice, people are bringing gifts, and You can see two candles of the church lit in the foreground.
